It’s very much a run-based roguelite, it’s turn-based, and it requires a ton of planning for every moves as the stakes go higher and higher the deeper into a run you are. So you know we said that we’d also branch out a bit from the deck-building? Well, there’s no better game for that than Into the Breach. The basics are the same – mob fights, gaining passive abilities or new cards, leveling up, and running into random situations that offer choice-based solutions – but the whole is richer for it. The use of a 3D map and clearly distinct play styles for various classes elevates Tainted Grail above your average deck builder game. It also borrows quite a bit from Darkest Dungeon in the ways of difficulty and tone (as in, it’s tough and unforgiving). It’s a lot more story-heavy than Slay the Spire, with the narrative unfolding elegantly across your inevitable multiple deaths. Uniquely, the game sees you manually traversing the maps rather than clicking between missions in the overworld. As a result, we’re treated to an apocalyptic, hyper-dark fantasy world that’s delightful to play. The atmosphere created by the Wyrdness – a reality-warping mist that infests the forests surrounding your village – is both desolate and nihilistic. You chop your way through an oppressively bleak world (filled with some stunning monster designs), improving your crack squad of hunters with leveling and brutal card combos. If Slay the Spire is a little cheery for you, then Tainted Grail takes things in an altogether darker direction while still retaining the fusion of deck-building and roguelike mechanics that make it so compelling. ![]() ![]() Platforms: PC | Xbox One/Series (available on Game Pass) Slay the Spire is a curious genre mashup, so while we’re going to feature plenty of games that straddle both deck-building and roguelikes, we’ll also branch out to other games that have a similar flow to Slay the Spire while not necessarily being deck-builders. ![]() Want to keep things handheld?
